World Wetlands Day

CIWEM organises an annual conference to celebrate World Wetlands Day. World Wetlands Day marks the signing of the Convention on Wetlands on 2nd February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea.

Each year the World Wetlands Day conference organsied by CIWEM brings together all the key organisations in the UK involved in wetlands issues to share knowledge, discuss innovative techniques, network, consider good practice case studies and promote multiple use and wetland biodiversity.

World Wetlands Day 2008

‘Taking forward the Wetland Agenda’ was the theme of this year's World Wetlands Day conference organised by CIWEM on 29 - 30th January 2008. The two days were packed with activities, including:

  • Guided tours of WWT's inspiring London Wetlands Centre (themes included invasive species and 'healthy wetlands: healthy people')
  • A lively workshop debated whether the UK needs a Strategy for Wetlands
  • An evening wine reception in central London was held, with presentations on the International Riverprize and last year’s RSPB/CIWEM Living Wetlands Award winner: Sutcliffe Park, Quaggy River Flood Risk Management Scheme
  • A one-day conference of keynote presentations and break-out discussion sessions enabled delegates to consider how to make the most of the planning processes of River Basin Management, the Periodic Review (of price determinations in the water industry), UK Biodiversity Action Plans and The Pitt Review (into the Summer 2007 floods), in their wetlands advocacy
